Tasman Mill
Tasman offers a range of opportunities for electrical graduates. It can range from high voltage power systems engineering involving 3.3kV breaker installation to the programming of totally new control systems software for the site. Although not apparent, the pulp mill consists of different processes such as kilns and boilers that involve advanced process control and power generation for the mill.

It has a range of SCADA systems (PLC,DCS and Fieldbus) in place that expose graduates to a broad range of technology only available in large sites.

Tasman has a positive approach towards new technology and has been in the forefront of implementing new types of systems on site. Since the mill is a 24/7 operation, it opens up unique challenges that involves innovative thinking to complete engineering projects with minimal affect to production targets.

Graduate program
Graduates are assigned mentors throughout their program to assist them in this development phase. The graduate program allows individuals to be seconded to the different areas within the mill, which provides a good introduction to the process and the people involved in the different plants. The company provides access to courses and training to encourage leadership and enhance professional development for engineers. There are also great opportunities to go on technical training and courses to keep abreast of the evolving technologies in the automation industry both on and off-site. Tasman's engineering partnership with Beca-AMEC ensures that all our engineering standards and practices are world-class. Tasman is working towards IPENZ accreditation of the graduate program.

My Projects
I am working with Beca-AMEC in Auckland for the configuration of our new SCADA systems for the Chemical Preparation Plant Upgrade project but since starting here my projects have ranged from liaison with consultants from Singapore for installation of a chemical dosing system to the design and installation of alarms in our safety systems. In addition to, acquiring engineering skills, being on site during all the phases of the projects from initial design to final commissioning has provided me with hands on experience in managing engineering projects. This has allowed me to pick up useful project management skills such as cost estimation, tender processes and construction supervision.

Currently Tasman is a great place to work, socially people are always helpful in "showing the ropes" to new graduates. There are a good mix of past and present graduates who are mates on and off work. The site is half an hour's drive from Whakatane Town and Ohope beach. Living 50m from the beach is an awesome lifestyle choice any day.
